Women Navigating Challenging Family Dynamics
Family is meant to be our safe harbour, but for many women in Hong Kong, relationships with family members can be one of life’s most complex and painful sources of stress. Whether you’re navigating a difficult parent, partner or ex; an overbearing in-law, a tense sibling dynamic, or the cultural and traditional expectations that come with family obligations, these relationships can leave you feeling drained, guilty, anxious, or disconnected from your own voice and values.
You don’t have to carry the weight of these relationships alone, and you don’t always have to cut ties to find peace. Change in how you relate to family is possible, even when you can’t change the other person.
I’m Suzy, a Counsellor at AMindset. I specialise in supporting women in Hong Kong to untangle the complexities of difficult family relationships. My clients often come to me feeling stuck between love, obligation, frustration, and self-doubt. Together, we create a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental space to slow down, re-orient, and reconnect with what truly matters to you.
How I Work
With over 20 years of experience, I bring both depth and practical clarity to every session:
Practical & Present-Focused: We look at what is and isn’t working in your family dynamics, equipping you with real-world tools and strategies to protect your wellbeing and calm your nervous system, while staying true to your values.
Uncovering Patterns: Where helpful, we gently explore recurring patterns from your family of origin, inherited ways of relating, and old coping strategies that may no longer be serving you, helping you break free from feeling stuck.
Warm, Grounded & Direct: My approach is down-to-earth, collaborative, and direct when it matters. Therapy is a space to pause and breathe, but it doesn’t always have to feel heavy. We also make room for lightness, humour, and always anchor back to your existing strengths.
I integrate a range of evidence-based talk therapies to meet your unique needs, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), person-centred counselling, and solution-focused therapy.
I also bring intermediate-level training in Somatic Experiencing (SE), a body-based approach that helps release stress and trauma stored in the nervous system, helping you find relief that lasts beyond the session. As a Certified Grief Educator, I also offer specialised, compassionate support for those navigating any form of loss, including the grief of an idealised family relationship.
Areas of Focus
I offer therapy for women navigating difficult family relationships and related challenges including:
- Navigating boundaries with parents, partners, exes, in-laws, and extended family
- Family expectations and cross-cultural pressures in Hong Kong
- Anxiety and stress
- Grief and loss (including the loss of the family relationship you wish you had)
- Depression
- Life transitions (for example: marriage, motherhood, relocation, caring for aging parents)
Why Work With Me?
With two decades of hands-on experience in Hong Kong, I bring both depth and practicality to every session. I’m passionate about equipping you with real-world tools to set boundaries, communicate more effectively, and reclaim your sense of self in your relationships. Most importantly, I’m here to listen, without judgment, and to help you reconnect with your own resilience and inner knowing.
